Native Spirit – What we are about

Native Spirit is a non profit, charitable organisation which has evolved over the course of several projects aimed at furthering the knowledge and preservation of indigenous cultures of the Americas. In June 2007 Native Spirit debuted with a week long film and video festival looking at the indigenous peoples of the three Americas. Screenings took place at a number of venues across London, and was hugely successful. In September 2008 the second Native Spirit Festival will return to London and have confirmation of a tour in Spain as well as invitations to bring indigenous films, workshops, lectures, art, photography and performances to several other locations in the UK and throughout Europe.

The Native Spirit Festival along with The Native Spirit Art Collective raises funds to support indigenous communities in the Americas through the Native Spirit Foundation. Projects that are supported through the Native Spirit Foundations Community fund include indigenous schools in the Mapuche, Maya and Wayuu Communities of South America, and the Cinematography Fund, which offers funds and technical support for film production and training, particularly to young indigenous people, helping provide not only employment opportunities but also produce more insightful cinematic material about indigenous cultures and their struggle to retain their traditions.

CINE INDIGENAUPSTAIRS from 7.30pm

Mapuche & the Forest Invasion (CHILE 2007)
Mapuche means people of the earth, an ancient indigenous culture which now faces the invasion of forest companies onto their traditional territories that supplant sacred millennial trees with fast growing pine and eucalyptus, which strip the land of nutrients and destroy the natural environment and the balance of harmony between traditional farmers and the mother earth.

In Spanish w/English subtitles, 32mins

Snowball Effect (Navajo USA)
The Snowball Effect explores the controversy surrounding the recently proposed expansion and snowmaking on the San Francisco Peaks as Native American tribal officials and spiritual leaders, Forest Service officials, and concerned citizens discuss the issues: sacred lands, protection, public health concerns associated with groundbreaking studies on wastewater, economic misconceptions, threats to the environment, global warming and a small community caught in the conflict. www.savethepeaks.org

The Canary Effect (
USA, 2007)

The Canary Effect takes an in depth look at the devastating effect that US policies have had on the Indigenous people of America. Using beautifully crafted imagery it presents a chilling case to what many believe is an ongoing genocide of the American Indian. Featuring interviews with some of the leading scholars and exponents of Indigenous struggles, alongside revealing insight from those who work and live on reservations today, The Canary Effect creates a link between the past and present in a unique way never before explored on film.
